Updated on: Mar 20, 2013
The Sanskrit term Ayurveda is composed of Ayus which means Life and Veda which means Knowledge or Science. Ayurveda is thus the science of life, the knowledge about life. It systematizes and applies the knowledge about health and disease, i.e. of balanced and unbalanced states of living beings and how unbalanced states can be corrected and the restored balance maintained.
The Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Ayurved and Research Institute was established in the year 2004 with permissions from the Central Council of Indian Medicine (C.C.I.M) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India, to help in achieving the basic aim of Ayurveda - of prolongation of a healthy life, prevention of diseases and thus, help for a person to attain the four principal aims of life : Dharma (Virtue), Artha (Wealth), Kama (Desires) and Moksha (Liberation). With Ayurveda slowly gaining global recognition, it is important that education in such a specialized field be imparted to students who wish to pursue it as a career.
