The Institute was started as a joint scheme of Indian government and government of Maharashtra as Visvesvaraya regional engineering college i.e. VRCE in June 1960. The institute was transformed into Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology and rewarded Deemed to be University status under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, on 26th June 2002. The Institute was founded in June 1960 and named after the eminent engineer, planner of the country Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The institute is also known as NIT Nagpur. The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the first six regional engineering colleges founded on the project granted by Government of India and the Maharashtra state government. The college has been provided independence in economical and administrative subjects to get rapid development. An independent board of governors comprising personnel of the central government, state government, AICTE, UGC, teaching faculty, industrialists and technologists manages the institute. Currently, VNIT is an independent co-ed engineering college, with 11 graduate and 8 undergraduate programs. Undergraduate programs lead to the B.Tech degrees, though the graduate students and postgraduate students get M.Tech. and Ph.D.degrees. VNIT has an architecture school rewarding the B.Arch. and M.Arch degrees. The Institution has a large section of highly experienced and accomplished faculty members who have made substantial contributions in their respective fields. Admissions to the undergraduate courses are done by the AIEEE. Admission for the post-graduate programs needs scores in both GATE and an all India entrance exam done by the admitting department. The VNIT institute provides 8 undergraduate programmes in Engineering of four year, one Undergraduate programme in Architecture of five year and 11 Graduate programmes of two year duration. VNIT too rewards Ph.D
