Also known as physical therapy, the branch of medicine is dedicated towards setting people’s physical ailments and disorders right. It is a rapidly developing critical remedial measure that is gaining more and more significance in today’s society. Physiotherapy strives to bring about an improvement in a person’s general health by ensuring proper physical movement and welfare.

In Maharashtra, there is a concentration of colleges and institutes that provide training in physiotherapy. Dr. D.Y. Patil College of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy at Kolhapur, the Govt. Physiotherapists today are some of the highest paid medical practitioners in the world due to sportspersons encountering regular injuries as a result of overwork and a general concern to keep one’s body functioning in top condition. In much graver situations, people with degenerative disorders, arthritis, neurological disorders and ones who are physically challenged are rehabilitated by practitioners by providing them with preventive and remedial procedures rather than oral medication.

Physiotherapists are required to have a sound knowledge of the human framework, the composition of bones, the functioning of the muscles and nerves and much more to be able to diagnose the cause of a physical disorder. The causes could range from genetic or heredity to accidents or diseases. Courses in Physiotherapy:

There is a B.Sc degree in Physiotherapy, the duration of which ranges from 3 to 4 years with last six months of internship at a hospital.
A Diploma in Physiotherapy is on a short term basis and could last from three months to a year.

Eligibility:

One should have completed a 10+2 with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English or an equivalent examination with a minimum of 50% marks in each of the subjects. The candidate should be older than seventeen years.

To get into the BPT- Bachelor of Physiotherapy Course it is mandatory to clear the Common Entrance Test held by the institutes.
