Homeopathy Colleges in Maharashtra

The word Homeopathy has been derived from the Greek words homoios meaning similar and pathos meaning suffering. This notable medical system was first made popular by Samuel Hahnemann in the eighteenth century. According to this system, an ill person is treated by use of the substance that can produce the symptoms of illness in a perfectly healthy person. With the arrival of German physicians and missionaries, India was introduced to the system of homeopathy in the year 1810.

Indians could instantly relate to this branch of medicine as it was found to have a great likeness with their beliefs and principles and this consequently lead to the spread of homeopathy throughout the country. Homeopathic dispensaries were found to be functioning in the major cities of India by the start of the twentieth century. More and more people started preferring homeopathic treatments and this also spurred the burgeoning of quacks claiming to be homeopathic experts.

The Government decided to put its foot down considering this dreadful situation in the country and in the year 1948, the teaching and practicing of Homeopathy was brought under strict regulations and supervision with the establishment of a Homeopathic Enquiry Committee. This was followed by the Government’s appointment of Homeopathic Advisory Committee in the year 1952 and a Central Act being passed in the year 1973. This official act gave Homeopathy the necessary recognition and it was accepted as one of the National Systems of Medicine in India.

A separate Central Council for the research in Homeopathy was instigated in the year 1978 after which Diploma and graduate level uniform level education in Homeopathy was made compulsory in 1983 in India. At present, one can easily avail post graduate courses in homeopathy. The current medical scenario makes Homeopathy one of the most popular forms of treatment in the country along with ayurveda and allopath. Out of the 186 homeopathic medical colleges in the country, several can be found in the state of Maharashtra.

Courses Eligibility:

A candidate should have attain 10+2 in the subjects of physics, chemistry, biology and English with minimum 45 % marks to be eligible for the Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) course. As in the MBBS Course, an All India Entrance Examination is required for selection into the BHMS course. The course duration is five and a half years, internship included. A four year diploma in homeopathy is also available. A three year long MD in homeopathy is available once the candidate has reached the post graduate level.
